METROPOLIS (Fritz Lang, 1927)


I finally got myself down to The Astor and saw Metropolis. I tried to watch it as a teenager but the mix of the Adam & The Ants music and my undeveloped taste for old timey art meant I only got about ten minutes in...

But when i saw the trailer at The Astor a few years back my head just about exploded. It looked like the greatest movie of all time! But having finally seen it, I think it might actually be the greatest trailer of all time...

The thing looks amazing, no doubt. But most of the money shots are in the trailer, and to be honest i found the rest of it pretty boring and hokey. I certainly didn't find it to be and kind of compelling drama.

It's something you have to see, no doubt, but like some frustratingly sprawling triple album by your favourite nutty genuis, I wish i could just edit it down to my favourite bits (like the lust crazed german guys in the picture above) and watch them over and over...
